Head of Quality & Food Safety, Food Manufacturing – Position Overview:

Reporting to the Head of Operations, the Head of Quality & Food Safety serves as an important member of the leadership team and is responsible for establishing, leading, and maintaining a food safety & quality culture throughout the company.  The incumbent will ensure adherence to all food safety & quality management programs in the company so that there is no risk to our customers, the general public, and our employees, and our product quality meets or exceeds expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading the Quality and Food Safety efforts in the company, and ensure highly disciplined compliance with all regulatory and company-defined food safety systems, procedures, and practices.
  • Lead and manage a team of Quality and Food Safety Mangers and Technicians and empower them to take charge and embrace accountability.
  • Collaborate with Operations management and with all senior leaders in the safe operation of the facility and driving a “safety first” culture.
  • Carry out RCA (root cause analysis), where needed
  • Lead preparation for and interaction with third party audits and auditors.
  • Liaise closely with regulatory bodies, like the USDA, and key customer QA representatives.
  • Ensure proper execution of product Food Safety and Quality testing and reporting.
  • Lead the day-to-day implementation of HACCP, QMS, and other supporting pre-requisite programs to meet the SQF Food Safety standards, working closely with the SQF Practitioner.
  • Lead the training and development of the Quality Assurance Technicians, scheduling and delegating tasks outlined in the Food Safety Plans, SOP manuals, and other supporting procedures, including monitoring and verification activities to assure products meet regulatory and customer standards.
  • Management of the Non-Conforming Equipment and Product Program.
  • Provide guidance, leadership, and assistance in problem solving efforts for SOP’s, GMP’s, Quality, Food Safety, and Process Improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with FDA/USDA regulations.
  • Ensure proper Product Specification management and Document Control management are in place and followed.
  • Must have the desire to lead the team and company to the next level of Food Safety, quality and accountability.
  • Coordinate recall program, initiate mock recalls, and update as needed

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelor of science in microbiology, food science or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years Quality Assurance experience
  • 5+ years supervisory or management experience
  • Experience in frozen potato or appetizer industry is a plus
  • Competent in leading and developing people
  • Competent in Quality/Food Safety and Good Laboratory Practices
  • Good understanding of hygienic design
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of HACCP/Food Safety Preventative Controls/SQF (or equivalent GFSI scheme)
  • Development of SOP’s, Policies, Specifications, etc.
  • Internal Auditing
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint
