Just can’t get good help anymore? These are my top 10 secrets revealed for finding and hiring the best talent.

.) Prepare a well-written job description that clearly states job duties, requisite skills, education and background. Include a pitch about the company and career growth opportunities (WIIFT or What’s In It for Them).

.) Define the hiring process, all steps delineated from posting the position to the day the new hire walks in your door. Compress the process as much as possible. Time kills all deals.

.) Compile a list of sources…where do you think you will find your candidates?

.) Create and standardize forms in advance: application form, reference check form, interview feedback forms, offer letters etc.

.) Learn how to conduct an interview and teach everyone on the team (watch for how-tos in an upcoming newsletter).

.) Know your market, be realistic about your compensation.

.) Plan in advance for candidates who receive multiple offers and/or counter-offers.

.) Set a realistic target start date, it helps to set the tone for the process.

.) Have a backup plan so you know what to do if the “ideal” candidate does not show up.

.) Send a thank you note to everyone you interviewed but did not hire. It is good PR for the company and keeps the door open for hiring those candidates in the future.
